SilverSneakers is a program offering both in-person and video-based classes aimed at improving the health and physical fitness of seniors. ItSilverSneakers.png (543 KB) has given senior citizens across the country a fun and accessible way to stay active as they age. The fact that this it’s the 30th anniversary is a testament to the value this program brings to the lives of so many. The Health Club is a proud partner with SilverSneakers and has provided the Norman senior community with a welcoming and supportive environment for over 25 years.

“We have instructors who lead each of these classes and can modify them to meet the needs of each individual. Whether they need more intensity, less intensity, or have physical limitations, there is always someone present who can ensure members are not just getting a great workout, but doing it safely as well,” said Micah Howell, Outreach and Program Developer of The Health Club.

SilverSneakers also offers a gym membership discount, which is covered by insurance. One of the main benefits is this allows members access to every SilverSneakers affiliated facility across the country, so if you’re traveling or would prefer to exercise in the comfort of your own home, you can! The classes are all low-impact and focus on everything from strength training, cardio, balance, range of motion, reflexes and more. Additionally, meeting for classes offers a great opportunity to get involved in the community and gather with others who are interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Bringing our community together

“One element that is exciting for our members is the social component because they get to meet new people and socialize,” Howell said. “We’ve got Senior Fitness and SilverSneakers Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and regulars that come to every single class. They meet for class, get to know each other, become friends and grab lunch afterwards. It really has a community feel to it.”

Often times, a gym can be an intimidating place and SilverSneakers has empowered many seniors in our community to feel at home in The Health Club.

“The Health Club is well-known for having a number of really great senior offerings and I think there is a need within our community for that. Our senior-focused classes create a space where members can feel comfortable and confident walking into the gym and get a great workout in a setting that is inviting,” Howell said.

Anyone can participate

While the SilverSneakers program was created with seniors in mind, the classes are certainly not exclusive to seniors only. Due to the nature of the classes being low-impact and easy to modify, the classes are a great place to start for someone looking to get into fitness or someone who has undergone surgery and wants to ease back into getting in shape after they complete their prescribed rehabilitation protocol. The Health Club has members of all age ranges participating in the SilverSneakers classes and it is inclusive for everybody.

“We are excited to celebrate 30 years of SilverSneakers and we look forward to many more years of providing this much-needed service to the community,” Howell said.
